How Long Does a Windshield Chip Repair Take?

The short answer: most chip repairs are done in 30 minutes or less. You can drop off your car, grab a coffee, and be back on the road before you finish it.

Here's exactly what to expect — and what can affect the timeline.

Before anything else, we assess the chip. We check:

• Size — Is it smaller than a quarter? Chips that size are almost always repairable.
• Location — Chips in the driver's direct line of sight or near the edge of the glass require extra care.
• Depth — A surface pit is different from a crack that's penetrated both layers of the laminated glass.

If the damage is repairable, we move straight to the next step. If it's too large or in a critical spot, we'll tell you honestly — and give you a replacement quote on the spot.

We clean out the damaged area to remove any dirt, moisture, or debris. This step matters more than most people realize — any contamination trapped under the resin will show up as a cloudy spot after the repair. We use a vacuum probe to pull out particles and dry the area completely.

A specialized resin is injected directly into the chip using a bridge tool that holds it in place under controlled pressure. The resin fills the void and bonds to the glass. We may cycle the pressure a few times to make sure the resin penetrates fully — especially on star breaks or bullseye chips with multiple fracture lines.

Once the resin is in place, we cure it with a UV lamp. This hardens the resin to a solid that's optically clear and structurally sound. Direct Florida sunlight can also be used in a pinch, but a UV lamp gives us consistent results regardless of cloud cover.

We polish the surface smooth, remove the bridge tool, and inspect the repair from multiple angles. A good repair is nearly invisible — you may see a faint outline where the chip was, but the structural integrity is fully restored and the crack won't spread.

A few things can add time to a repair:

• Multiple chips — Each additional chip adds roughly 15–20 minutes.
• Complex break patterns — Star breaks and combination breaks (chip + short crack) take more resin cycles to fill completely.
• Moisture in the damage — If the chip has been exposed to rain or a car wash, we need extra time to dry it out before injecting resin. Moisture is the enemy of a clean repair.
• Cold glass — In cooler weather, glass contracts slightly and resin flows more slowly. We warm the glass first, but it adds a few minutes.
• ADAS recalibration — If your vehicle has a camera mounted to the windshield (lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, etc.), a chip in or near the camera's field of view may require a recalibration check after repair. That's a separate service — we'll let you know upfront if it applies to your vehicle.
