Here's a clear, step-by-step guide for handling windshield emergencies safely and getting your vehicle back on the road fast.

Pull over safely if the damage happened while driving. Take a breath and look at what you're dealing with:

• A chip or small crack — If it's smaller than a dollar bill and not in your direct line of sight, you can likely drive carefully to your destination before scheduling repair. Don't wait more than a day or two — chips spread fast, especially in Florida heat.
• A large crack or spiderweb pattern — If the crack spans more than a few inches or crosses your field of vision, your windshield's structural integrity is compromised. Drive only if absolutely necessary, and go directly to your destination.
• Shattered glass — If the windshield has caved in or is fully shattered, do not drive the vehicle. The windshield is a structural component of your car — it supports the roof and deploys the passenger airbag correctly. A missing or fully broken windshield makes the vehicle unsafe.

It's tempting to run your finger along a crack or try to clear away glass fragments. Resist the urge. Touching the crack can introduce oils and debris that prevent a clean repair bond. If there are loose glass fragments on the dash or seat, carefully brush them away from the interior — but leave the windshield itself alone.

Florida weather is hard on glass. Heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms can all cause a chip to spread rapidly. If you can't get the vehicle repaired immediately:

• Park in the shade or a garage — Direct sun heats the glass unevenly and accelerates crack spreading.

• Cover the chip with clear tape — A small piece of clear packing tape over a chip keeps moisture and debris out temporarily. This is not a repair — it's just protection until you can get it fixed.
